Our next project is DVD Menu Design. The project is to produce our own original DVD front ends using our own original material. In the brief we were given a choice of four different film genres as a basis for our projects : Independent Sci-Fi, Independent Horror, Independent Thriller or Children's Animation. I have chosen Independent Thriller.
I chose Independent Thriller as Thriller is not only one of my personal favourite genres but I felt from an Interactive point of view, you can start to build tension here in the Front End before the Movie has even started, bringing the audience in and attaching them to the movie before they have even seen any of the movie.
The first stage for a project like this is obviously Research. With my genre decided I thought the first move would be to Research Existing Products, looking at other Thriller Front Ends. I looked at Gran Torino (2008), Gomorrah (2008) and Training Day (2001), considering different elements such as imagery, sound, animations and transitions etc. I noticed some similarities between these different examples. For instance there was a definite focus on Character in the Menus, such as shots of faces or film clips focusing on a certain character. Also musically, all the music had sustained high pitch notes, to increase tension and to perhaps scare and heavy rhythms to once again increase tension and to gather pace. I also noticed there was focus on shadow and darkness in all of the imagery and there weren't many bright colours.
Throughout the week I will continue with Research looking at Budgeting Productions, using different software and equipment and continuing with Idea Growth, trying to find a target audience and make some final decisions on the menu.
