Grown Ups

So the first movie we saw as a part of the course was “Grown Ups”, a summer comedy about a group of 5 high-school buddies reunited under sad circumstances for a weekend of nostalgia.  Overall I enjoyed the movie far more than I thought I would. While rarely laugh out loud funny, the film was simply an enjoyable 102 minutes of summer popcorn viewing. However, it was very simple, in both themes (growing old, coming-of-age, escaping the rat race and seizing the day etc) and formula as well as script writing. The film struggled during the first half hour as joke after joke misfired. This was painfully clear in the cinema as it seemed the director had almost left “pause for laughter” and all there was was a dull awkward silence. This wasn’t helped by the repitive writing style where the friends simply fired cheeky insults at each other for the entire movie. That said, there were many funny moments and although often the film failed to interact with its audience, it wasn’t trying to be different or present new ideas or get the viewer thinking, it was there to be a bit of fun and an enjoyable movie, even if a little too familiar in style.
